Jail inmates transferred for Mel Gibson movie

Despite protests, inmates at a Mexican jail have been transferred to make way for a Mel Gibson movie.

A total 214 detainees were taken to Villa Aldama penitentiary, 50 kilometres from the eastern state of Veracruz. Some had fought with warders just before the transfer, AFP reported.

Ignacio Allende prison chief Victor Gerardo Hernandez said 1100 detainees remained. Hundreds of relatives of prisoners had protested against the move.

Governor Fidel Herrera Beltran earlier said Gibson slated several scenes to be shot at the prison after scouting the location in April. Gibson shot his 2006 Apocalypto in eastern Mexico. He donated $US1 million toward hurricane relief in the Gulf of Mexico region in 2005.
